3. What is familial Alzheimer's disease?

Familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) is characterized by familial aggregation of AD and a Mendelian pattern of inheritance (i.e. ≥ 2 affected individuals in ≥ 2 generations). Some FAD patients presented cognitive symptoms before 65 years, called early onset FAD (EOFAD), while some others complaint symptoms after the age of 65 years –old, which is late onset FAD (LOFAD). The prevalence of EOFAD is 5.3/100,000. The genetic background plays a critical role in FAD.
