5. Why is the CFAN study so important?

Currently, Medicines used in the dementia stage cannot reverse the course of AD since neurons have been irreversibly damaged.

Fortunately, latest research has demonstrated the development of AD is a continuous dynamic clinico-pathological disease process, with AD pathophysiological changes present up to 15 years before the occurrence of clinical symptoms. It is thus been proposed that interventions should be initiated during the predromal stage in order to delay or slow the pathological progression of AD. Moreover, imaging and fluid biomarkers could help to diagnose pre-dementia AD and track trajectory of disease. CFAN will assess the neuropsychological, fluid and imaging markers in prodromal FAD annually and then, to find out the predictable biomarkers to facilitate the early detection of AD. CFAN will provide a new diagnostic model for pre-MCI and MCI due to AD.
