12. Why and how to perform lumbar punctures?

A lumbar puncture is a diagnostic and sometimes therapeutic medical procedure. Diagnostically it is used to collect CSF to confirm AD or exclude conditions such as meningitis and subarachnoid hemorrhage Therapeutically it may be used to reduce increased intracranial pressure. Under most circumstances, lumbar puncture can be performed safely. It is regarded as a routine examination in the clinical assessment of AD.
